30 Days of Substack

Join me in April 2025 for a Creative Challenge: 30 Days of Substack and as I prep for it in my new Digital Garden.

What Do We Want to Learn in 30 Days of Substack?

What Can Substack Do?

Substack is a great place to publish content and get connected to Substack readers.

It automatically creates an email newsletter for you, saving you some steps.

Content types are primarily text and photo, but you can post audio, and short video, too.

You can also host your podcast on Substack, so if you are just getting into to that and want a simple solution, Substack might be a good choice.

Substack also has a Social Media function called Notes that mimics a Twitter-like feed. (Yes, I still call it Twitter and always will.) This is growing in popularity, so getting in early might be beneficial.

It also has a Chat feature for your subscriptions. Many of these seem to be for paid subscribers, so I can't say if it's used much or not since I only subscribe to a handful of accounts.

Why I want to Use Substack

In a word, readers.

Substack has people there I want to connect with, whereas my Wordpress blog is out on the web connected to readers only by search engines.

Should You Have Your Own Website, Too?

Yes, if you have a webs site, Substack can be a good add-on.

If you don't have an email list yet, Substack does that. This is an important feature, because reaching people through email is a big deal.

It's not as full featured as some email newsletter providers, but for beginners it's part of what makes Substack a great all-in-one solution.

Having your own site allows you to design it like you want, and you own the content. You don’t have much control over the way your content looks on Substack.

Another huge bonus of your own site is you are not a Digital Sharecropper, who's dependent on tilling someone else's property.

In other words, crossposting your website content to your substack is not a bad idea. Though you may want to make your website the original source so search engines point folks to your site first, not to your Substack.
